The Mendel cable car
In a 10 to 15 minutes walk from our house you’ll reach the valley station of the cable car, constructed in 1901. Starting at 513 m above sea level it leads up to the Mendel pass (1363 m. above sea level) in only 12 minutes. A journey to the Mendel, the most popular mountain in Kaltern, will give you the possibility to have a wonderful view of Kaltern and its surroundings. Furthermore, the Mendel is the starting point for trips to the mountain peaks of Roen, Gantkofel and the Penegal.
Exploring the surroundings by bike
In spite of the partly steep and hilly landscape Kaltern offers very nice and not too demanding bike tours. Especially in spring, when thousands of fruit trees are in blossom, it is a fantastic experience to ride through the landscape south of Lake Kaltern. In Kaltern you’ll find different bike rentals and at the tourist office you can rent free GPS gadgets which contain the complete bike tours of South Tyrol. This way, your bike tours will turn into an unforgettable experience.
The “Rastenbachklamm”
There’s a beautiful tour starting from the place of Altenburg in the surroundings of Kaltern through the so-called Rastenbachklamm to Lake Kaltern. Altenburg is situated on a natural stone balcony on the Mendel slope with a beautiful view of Lake Kaltern. An adventurous steep track leads from the hamlet to the largest natural lake of South Tyrol. The track winds itself down the narrow gorge of the Rastenstream, past idyllic ruins and waterfalls. Especially in summer this place is very popular because of its coolness and freshness.

The “ice-holes”
The ice-holes were formed by enormous rubble caused by a rock crash. In the niches and caves underneath the partly gigantic stone lumps it is also in summer so cold that ice is formed. There you’ll also see unusually interesting flora which is normally found on 1500 meters above sea level, although this place is situated on only 500 meters above sea level.
The sport zone
It’s never boring there! In the sport zone of Altenburg everybody will find something for her or him. 6 beautiful sand courts and 1 hard court invite you to play tennis. We offer beginners and advanced courses as well as individual lessons. Furthermore, there are three nice playing grounds for children in the middle of the wood. Not far away you’ll also find a keep-fit trail.
Take an evening stroll through the village of Kaltern
Be invited to relax and enjoy your evening! Every Thursday in July and August the shops will be open for you until 10 o’clock. Take a pleasant stroll through the idyllic center of Kaltern at the end of a sunny day at Lake Kaltern. Different musical groups and animation events round off the evening.
The high ropes course in the woods of Altenburg
Since 2008 there is a high ropes course in the woods of Altenburg next to the sporting grounds. The high ropes adventure park consists of courses of different degrees of difficulty. The platforms are anchored in the pine trees, larches and spruces. They are the starting points for different elements which differ in their degree of difficulty: nets, beams, cable-ways and bridges whose length varies between 3 and 60 meters and which form connections between the woods. The whole family will find entertainment at this high ropes course since 7 courses are suitable for children. Athletic people venture to do the Black Course which offers extremely difficult obstacles. Further information HERE
